Brooklyn-based duo Neg-Fi debuted as a band in 2003 with a series of home-made cassettes released for the annual DIY holiday art event La Superette. Incorporating drastically detuned guitars, bass, walkie-talkies and handmade devices, Neg-Fi creates short, minimalist compositions with maximum impact. Following up the self-released LP Listen-OK in 2006 and a split EP with Atlanta-based noise artist Eiliyas earlier this year, they will soon be releasing their 2nd full length LP mid side. Both members are also part of the new Glenn Branca Ensemble, and have performed in Branca’s Symphony No.13 in New Jersey, Belgium, London, Rome, and St. Louis.

Brownout bio
------------
A few years ago, when making a myspace page for my solo endeavors as brownout, I answered the Q “sounds like?” with “A caveman with a tambourine and a sinewave generator”. Having since played a few performances in solo or near-solo circumstances, I have found that this phrase still fits, maybe better than I ever imagined. I don’t really use a tambourine, but rather a homemade shaking stick, and my generator produces waves of less purity that virginal sines. I do have a laptop and employ it, along with my voice and crude horns, to fill things out. But I don’t fill ‘em out fully, as I generally prefer simplicity, space and repetition. Blinding Headache and Information (who recently regrouped to perform with our “No Wave” contemporaries Teenage Jesus and the Jerks) were my first 2 bands, both contributing to the “legendary” Tape #1 (reissue imminent on Anthology Recordings).
V-Effect was the first group I was in to make a proper album, 1983’s Stop Those Songs, on Fred Frith’s Rift Records. Critic Robert Palmer included our album in his top-ten list for the year in the New York Times. With Guigou Chenevier of Etron Fou LeLoublan and Charles Hayward of This Heat, I was a member of the drum trio Les Batteries, whose first album Noisy Champs (1986) is about to be released for the first time on CD. I formed Fish & Roses with Sue Garner and David Sutter in the late 80’s and recorded three albums with them and toured the US and Europe. Sue and I have continued playing together, first in Run On with Alan Licht (3 records on Matador and a number of miscellaneous EPs and random tracks) and more recently as a duo, sometimes as Two Mule Team and sometimes under our own names (Thrill Jockey released our album Still).

Necking bio

Necking was formed in 2004 and for years had a freely rotating line-up around a few central members. For the last few years the group has settled into a regular line-up of Nick Lesley (original founder), Dong-Ping Wong, and Rop Vazquez. Necking plays a hyper-active form of improv noise rock influenced by the hardcore punk from San Diego which they grew up with in the 90s. They play two full drum kits, electronics and voices.

Dong has a masters in architecture and founded the firm Family (http://familyarchitects.com/), and formerly played in Oma Yang.
Rop saves dogs at Barc Shelter (http://barcshelter.org/), also plays in X-Ray Eyeballs, and formerly played in Rice, The Peechees, and Semi Automatic.
Nick (http://nicklesley.com/) has an mfa in Performance and Interactive Media Arts, works at Electronic Arts Intermix, also plays in Gunung Sari, Alien Whale, and Prsms, formerly played in Oma Yang, Felicia & Coctopus, and Vholtz.

You Are Here (The Maze) is a performance festival in a sculptural maze taking place at Williamsburg's Death By Audio from September 10 - October 2, 2009. Emphasizing the sprawling and interconnected nature of New York's underground, a trip through the maze offers a peak inside NYC's diy art/music scene. A meditation on passage and desire, You Are Here engulfs the space and presents beckoning inhabitants, dead ends, and uplifting epitaphs. Medium and genre vary and overlapping and simultaneous performances are frequent, each performer establishing a different corner or dead end as his or hers. Participating artists in the 3-week festival include Skeletons and the Kings of All Cities, Zs, Excepter, Mick Barr, Knyfe Hyts, The Present, Loud Objects, Grooms, Effi Briest, Extra Life, Mike Pride, Dan Friel, Ninjasonik, Vaz, Pygmy Shrews, Nine 11 Thesaurus, and many many others.

The following performance schedule should be used only as a loose guide. You Are Here subverts prefab expectations for both audiences and performers—there is no prescribed order, start time or end time, duration, location of performance, relation of audience to performers, and so on. All of the participating artists have been asked to create something site-specific since the performances will, in fact, take place within the maze. Audiences will be asked only to expect something unusual.

The anti-festival festival OR why this festival is different from all other festivals

You Are Here was first presented by Trouble at Chashama's Visual Arts Space in Midtown Manhattan. This year’s maze returns to Brooklyn and is a real for us by us type of affair. You Are Here is a festival drawn from within the scene, not the work of corporate sponsored parties wishing to develop markets. No one gets free shoes or gift bags full of stuff and the festival doesn’t push any specific beverage or brand. This festival also won't fly people in from all over and make a big super-festival. You Are Here is a local affair, mostly local bands will play, and many of them have personal and ongoing relationships with each other and with Trouble. You Are Here is about Brooklyn and about the diy scene in New York in general. It’s about activism and about relationships and about immediacy and not least about a community that, perhaps in spite of the internet, still exists on a local level.

You Are Here is also about domesticity in several senses, not least of which is the fact that the artists Trouble (Sam Hillmer and Laura Paris) are in fact a married couple with a child and a home in Bushwick which also houses both of their studios. As any one who is an artist knows, your relationship is either part of your creative life or it’s competing with it. Trouble plants themselves firmly in the first category with their work together on the maze. Together, they are devoted to creating extreme environments that have no exterior, public art both condoned and illegal, and other kinds of visual/sound art intended to be used for some purpose. Their work is about community, spirituality, politics, craft, and beauty. Outreach is a part of all of their projects, as is what they call “in-reach”: designing events that strengthen the ties within the DIY art community and the art world as a whole. The inspiration behind the imagery in this year's Maze project includes "the six realms" from Tibetan Buddhism and other elements of Buddhist cosmological theory.

This is my newest band, started off with OJ and Carly from Golden Triangle as some demo project, but turned into a real band when Jack (ex-Black Lips) and I joined to do drums and synths. OJ sings and plays guitar with Carly on bass and Jab on vocals.

NECKING

Necking has been around for over 5 years, started out as a drums duo between Nick and Dong, then later on added a revolving door of noisemakers and musicians filling in to accompany both drummers. The last couple of years, we stayed as a quintet with me on bass/homemade instruments/vox, Daniel on guitar, Dong on drums and Nick on drums and vocals. What people dont know about the band is that its always improvised. Necking has never ever practiced or got together to practice any songs, which can complicate recordings.

RICE

This is the newest incarnation of RICE with me on vocals, Daniel (Battleship) on guitars, Aleks (Battleship) on bass and Julian (FIASCO) on drums. Original version of Rice existed from 1991 to 1993 with me on vocals, along with Carlos, who joined me in the Peechees, now in Love or Perish, on bass. Jason from Aspects of Physics/Three mile pilot on guitars, and Matt anderson on drums, who started Gravity Records and sang for Heroin. We also had the future horn section of Rocket From the Crypt. Yeah, Hardcore band with horns. We put out a couple 7" vinyls on Vinyl communication and put out a best of on lookout records. In case you have yet picked up on the pun, Rice is all about the grain we eat called RICE, every song directly has meanings to the struggle for, and the survival of different cultures directly connected to the cultivation of RICE.

And if I can find it, I'll also drop the Lo-Hi remixes that came out w/ their japanese release CD in 1999, as well as some really old remixes from 95-98, that ranges from Elliot Smith to Kathleen Hanna to Oval to Sea and Cake to Tortoise to Tristeza. Then, after you get off the Q22 (or Q35) bus, walk down Beach 169th St to the ocean, turn right at the “Unsupervised Beach - no lifeguards” sign, walk along the beach past 5 breakwaters. We will either be there or will have a sign posted there saying where to go from there.

BIKING / DRIVING DIRECTIONS:
simply take Flatbush Avenue away from Downtown Brooklyn, until it crosses Jamaica Bay on the Marine Parkway Bridge, and ends at the Rockaways. Left exit to Rockaway Point Blvd and turn right onto Rockaway Point Blvd / Beach Channel Dr / Rockaway Breezy Blvd. You will immediately see Beach 169th St. Lock up or park there (or as close as you can get), and follow the after-the-bus walking directions from above.

NOTE: the nearest grocery is at the train-to-bus transfer at Beach 116th St. Don’t forget to buy sunscreen, food to BBQ, charcoal, beverages, etc. While it is a National Park and not an NYC Parks Dept park, and things are considerably more lax than on city beaches, open container is still frowned upon. Bring cups.

What is there for me to say about the Peechees that you cant google or search anywhere in the internet. Everything we have ever done or say or play is all over the net. Peechees started at the brink of Rice's implosion. Rice was on tour with Bumblescrump, Chrisser's old band in 1992, and we went to Olympia and met Molly, then she came down and finished the last week of tour with us. 2 years later, We got together to jam. We intended to do only a song for the "Rock Stars Kill" compilation, just to record, but Lint from Rancid asked us if we wanted to play this skatejam show, and the Peechees was born.

SEMIAUTOMATIC

Semiautomatic was the duo that Akiko and I did in the late 90s in Brooklyn, New York. This band was my breakaway from rock music, at the end of the Peechees I was getting into battle DJs and scratching and hiphop/electro, that after I moved to New York, it was proper to go with the flow. With the year 2000 looking in the near distance, we made the jump to electronic and played around the genre for a couple records until going back to a different perspective of rock and a keen on the dancefloor.

"The Brooklyn-based electronic punk group Semiautomatic features vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Akiko Carver and programmer/multi-instrumentalist Rop Vasquez. At one point the band also included Ian Vanek of Japanther and the Tight Bro's from Way Back When. Vasquez, a former member of the PeeChees, the Lefties, the Creeps, and Rice, also has a solo project, manmatesmachine, which features homemade and modified electronic instruments that appear on Semiautomatic's music as well. Named after Technics' '70s semi-automatic direct-drive turntables, the group issued its self-titled debut in 2000 on Kill Rock Stars' sister imprint, 5 Rue Christine. They moved to Vex for 2001's The Trebuchet, but returned to 5RC for the following year's Resident Genius.

Along with their Semiautomatic duties, Carver and Vasquez are both visual artists as well: Vasquez is a graphic designer, and Carver, an animator, directed a Claymation video for the song "The Ballad of Puss Puss," which was shown at the NAATA San Francisco Asian American International Film Festival. In 2003, Semiautomatic released Wolf Centric, which included two tracks with the Slits' Ari Up; the group met Up at a New York Ladyfest show in 2001, and Carver contributed vocals on one of Up's dancehall records. Other collaborations and projects include an EP remixed by Concentrick (aka Tim Green of the Fucking Champs, Lice, Nation of Ulysses) on Gold Standard Laboratories, as well as music for the gritty Asian-American kids-gone-wrong film Better Luck Tomorrow on Paramount/MTV films and a split 7" with XBXRX. ~ Heather Phares, All Music Guide"

THE LEFTIES

The Lefties were a duo w/ me on the guitar and Christopher(the Peechees) on drums. We both took turns on vocals. Whenever the Peechees couldnt do a show, we'd jump in instead, until it took a life of its own. We started it sometime in 1995, from the idea that we were both left-handed and that the left-side of the heart is the romantic side (never proven), also I was into twee. That and owning a Rickenbacker/John Lennon model guitar made go soft. In 1996, we drove down to LA and recorded a bunch of songs w/ Brent and Josh from Further/Beachwood Sparks and they ended up as "These Boys Love You," a mock of the Beach Boys Love You record. The record came out in 97 on Xmas records.

Take the F train all the way there (there's a "Roosevelt Island" stop), and bring your guitars & beach umbrellas & blankets & folding chairs & your beverages (IN A CUP, NO GLASS OR OPEN CONTAINERS) & your hibachis & charcoal & stuff to grill & whatnot.

SHOW: Necking playing in a Police Station Bus

John Benson (A minor Forest,Hale Zukas,Evil Wikkid Warriors) bought an 40 feet long ex-police station Bus and converted in into a show/performance space that runs on bio-diesel and solar panels. The decker on the back has a stage for the band and can fit 50 people. He has hosted 120+ shows in the bus, sometimes when its driving around.

He is having a show this saturday, May 24 at 3 PM and also will be projecting the show inside the bus on the outside of the bus (John will be projecting on the giant water wells outside project robot.)
